Eight signs you need a holiday

Eight signs you need a holiday by Amber Rolfe Summer is finally here… Unfortunately, not all of us get to look forward to a break from work â€" whether it’s because of the fear of falling behind, or the struggle of getting holiday signed off during a busy time of year. However, allowing yourself time to recharge is absolutely essential for your wellbeing. Not to mention your productivity. To help you realise the importance of taking a break (and when you should take one), here are eight sure-fire signs you need a holiday:  You’re losing your temperA lack of holiday is often one of the main causes of ‘making mountains out of molehills’.For example, it could be that Tim from Accounts has taken your mug AGAIN, Stacey from Sales is using the printer when you need it, or your computer keeps doing that ‘error’ thing â€" and all you can do is react with irrational rage.If you keep making a big deal over problems that you’d usually be able to resolve without much stress, a break could be exactly wha t you need to start seeing things in a more positive light.Six signs you’re working too hardYou can’t sleepIf you’re having trouble getting to sleep at night or you’re waking up at all hours worrying about whether you did or didn’t send off that important report, it could be a sign of stress.Sure, working hard is good way to boost your career â€" but not if it comes at the expense of everything else. By creating an even work-life balance, both your professional and personal life will benefit. And, most importantly, you’ll actually get some sleep. How to achieve a work-life balanceYou’re making mistakes When you’re tired and in need of a holiday, little mistakes might seem more frequent. It might be that you clumsily leave typos in an email to your CEO, you make errors in customer transactions, or you’re always putting things where they don’t belong (see: teabags in the fridge). But try not to be too hard on yourself. Instead, see your mistakes as a sign that you need some downtime. Giving yourself regular breaks isn’t just great for your wellbeing, it’ll also help better your performance at work. You’re making unhealthy choicesTiredness, lethargy, and a lack of motivation can only mean one thing for your diet; and it probably involves cake. And maybe wine. And maybe 76 bars of chocolate…but who’s counting? The point is, whilst it’s easy to use bad habits as a coping mechanism when you’re in need of a break â€" it shouldn’t be seen as a long-term fix.So if you’ve started regularly skipping the gym, replacing salads with hob nobs, and overdoing it on the boozy brunches, take some time to revive your health with a few days off work.Trust us. Your body will thank you for it.Six tips to improve your workplace wellbeingTop 5 ways to keep fit at workYou’re neglecting your personal lifeDoes it often feel like all you do is work? It’s time to fix that. After all, there are only so many missed drinks with friends or cancelled family ou tings you can take before you â€" not to mention your family and friends â€" are likely to crack.Spending too much time and energy on your professional life, without allowing yourself any time off, is never likely to end well. So, if you’re at work so often you’re beginning to feel like you actually live there, it could be a sign to start searching for flights.Six things productive people do every dayYou’ve got ‘holiday envy’OK, so you’re super happy for your friends to be going away for the fourth time this year. But whilst you can appreciate a few (hundred) good beach photos, you still can’t help but wonder when it’ll be you who gets to brag about having cocktails at 2pm on a Tuesday. If this sounds familiar, it’s probably time for a break. So book a trip, pack your bags, and post all of the hashtags (you know, as soon as you’ve booked time off and agreed it with your manager).#sun #sea #sand #hotdogsorlegs.Out of office email templateYou’ve lost your sparkFindi ng the motivation to do a great job at work can be tricky if you can’t remember the last time you had a break. Especially if your role is particularly taxing.Common signs and symptoms include: always snoozing your alarm, sighing a lot, and frequently wondering if anyone would notice if you just didn’t go to work today.Hint: they probably would. No matter how much you love your job, it’s completely natural to have a drop in enthusiasm if it’s all you do/think/dream about. So give yourself some time to recharge, and you might be surprised at how motivated you are on your return. And if it doesn’t help? It might be time for a new job…Eight signs it’s time to resignStill searching for your perfect position? View all available jobs now

The job market in October University of Manchester Careers Blog

The job market in October There seems to have been a remarkably high number of ads coming into the Careers Service recently, given the general state of the job market, so Ive updated my graph showing how many job ads have been advertised month by month on CareersLink (University of Manchester login required). It really does show the improvement in the job market, at least for the kinds of jobs which employers want our students to know about. Novembers figures arent in yet, obviously, but October showed another increase on last year. There are quite a few issues you need to take into account when viewing these figures: One job ad can be for one, or for many, jobs. At this time of year, when large employers announce their new graduate schemes, they may send us one ad per job, or one ad to cover tens or even hundreds of jobs. Later in the year, most job ads are for one or maybe two jobs. Quite a number of big name employers advertised their jobs even earlier than October you need to go back to Septembers ads to see those. These are employers who specifically want to target University of Manchester students and graduates, so it may not reflect the job market in total. Employers classify the type of job themselves, and can put ads in more than one category. Sometimes this can seem a bit random we do get a few employers who claim their job ad covers every single category weve got! However, given this caveat, just over a quarter of ads were for jobs in engineering/manufacturing/construction/property, with just under a quarter classified as advertising/marketing/sales/buying or as IT. (Note: the big finance and legal push for ads would have happened in September.) The number of ads sent to us always tails off, starting in November, but Ive been surprised to see that weve received over 180 ads just in the last week theres still time to apply for jobs for next year. You can also see that there is always a peak of ads around May/June. You dont find big company graduate schemes advertised in the summer (they mostly get filled in the autumn rush ie now). However, smaller employers or those with one-off or specialist jobs   often only advertised a couple of months before they want to fill the job. They know that there will be a whole new crop of graduates coming on to the job market in June, so thats when they advertise. If youre not due to finish your Masters or PhD until October, dont ignore this glut of jobs in early summer employers may be perfectly happy to wait for 3 months until youre available. Meant to Be - When I Grow Up

Intended to Be - When I Grow Up Deirdre Flynn is a companion of mine from my Corporate America days. She began as an Executive Assistant (like me!) at the equivalent monetary counseling organization only half a month after me, and our previous on-screen character attaches bound us to one another rapidly. Much to our dismay that marry both have our sights set on Something More, and marry give our notification inside seven days of one another. I approached Deirdre to be a Counselor for Career Camp (enrollment opens not long from now for those on this list!), however first heres a greater amount of her story. I'm remaining over my loft restroom sink gazing straight into my puffy, ragged looking and restless eyes. For the fourth, or is it eighth night, straight I am staying with my washroom reflect as I take a gander at my appearance and state Something must change. It was late 2009 and I had been a pleased New Yorker for near ten years. I had shown up, naive, at 18 years old and obstinately sought after being an on-screen character in spite of not having any cash, awful tryout encounters and abandoning clinical protection for the greater part of my 20's. The 12 PM breakdown in my washroom was happening a long time after the stars had left my eyes and in my third year of working in Corporate America, a spot where I ended up far expelled from what my identity was and what I was acceptable at. Not at all like my past employments I held while seeking after acting, I cherished the existence this activity managed me in the sense I could live alone, I could take outings, and I could go to the specialist. I was unable to return to the hand to mouth acting life however I was unable to remain in this spot. Without precedent for my life, I didn't have a clue what to do. I was turning, I was lost and I was apprehensive from all the vulnerability. Comprehending what I needed had been a characterizing normal for mine. I felt as though I had changed from being dauntless to dreadful. I concluded that night I wasn't going to live like this any more. I started eyeballing an amazing remainder; what I could provide for my life and what I need to do with it. I was supplicating and bantering about returning to class to get an experts in Theater Ed (summers off!) yet that necessary two additional long stretches of Corporate America to bear the cost of the expense of school (boo). I addressed on the off chance that I cherished acting enough to return to the way of life I recently had and discovered the appropriate response was 'no'. I understood I needed to educate, I needed to travel, and I needed to be occupied with and with my life. I adored New York yet there was a move in our relationship. I started to feel as though I was remaining in a relationship that was natural, adored, and agreeable in any case, now, had gone as far it as it would go. At that point the exit plan came in the most unforeseen bundle and at a time where I was generally prepared to go out on a limb a. While squirming with fatigue at my work area, not long after my restroom one-on-one pow-pow, I got an email from my companion Rachel who had established an association in Thailand devoted to forestalling kid misuse in the sex exchange. She required somebody who was eager to move there, make their volunteer program and show understudies English. I felt as though I had been hit with a thunder jolt. I composed back 'yes' and hit send before I permitted the sensible voices in my mind to contend with my heart against the astuteness of going. I gathered pledges $10,000 and leave my place of employment 8 months after I got that email. I moved to Thailand for a year to work with The SOLD Project. I lived in a rice field, learned Thai, figured out how to ride a motorbike and detoxed from 10 years in New York. The reality of living was refined down to its most perfect structure to give adore and be cherished. It completely changed me. I presently observe the yo-yo of making my own way as a gift. Nightfall is a piece of the excursion. The troubled dullness of the corporate activity pointedly delineated for me the non-negotiables. It showed the non-negotiables to me the same amount of as being down and out and being an on-screen character had uncovered to me what I could and couldn't live with. Lucidity is an uncommon and delightful thing to have the option to acknowledge and explore. I have no questions regarding a mind-blowing needs and what I can manage without. I currently live in Oklahoma City functioning as the Communications Director of End Sex Trafficking Day and working inside the network to bring issues to light of human dealing. I live in a spot I can bear to do what I cherish and be a decent individual (here's taking a gander at your NYC). I am as glad as I have been. I can't state I have everything made sense of yet that is OK. Possibly you never do. Maybe it's what makes life an undertaking and worth living. Be that as it may, I have figured out how to confide in myself and this way. I know who I am and what I can do and I have discovered a spot where I can utilize that for an option that could be greater than myself. I think my preferred statement summarizes it: I might not have gone where I planned to go, however I wound up where was I intended to be. A previous on-screen character turned Corporate America moonlighter turned Anti-Human Trafficking advocate. Quite a while inhabitant of New York City, she left the huge city lights for Thailand to work with The SOLD Project. Deirdre now lives in Oklahoma City where she has been blogging and working with different enemy of - dealing associations bringing issues to light of sexual misuse inside the United States.
